Darren Aronofsky introduces us to Charlie, an online English teacher from Idaho. In front of his classmates, best friend, and nurse Liz, he declines to provide his name on camera due to his enormous stature. Charlie’s indignant daughter Ellie and Thomas, a young missionary from the New Life Church, repeatedly knocks on Charlie’s door. Liz begs Charlie to go to the hospital, but he refuses, claiming he has no insurance and cannot afford to pay for care even though his blood pressure is sky-high. Thomas, meantime, is unaware of the profound impact that his fundamentalist Christian church’s extreme conservatism has had on Charlie, Liz, and Ellie’s lives.
