We witness the coming-of-age journey of Doris as she grapples with the challenges of asserting herself in school. Simultaneously, Doris faces familial discord, especially her strained relationship with her mother. Her mind is consumed with the responsibility of caring for her terminally ill son. Unexpectedly, Doris forms a bond with a grieving husband who is protesting outside her brother’s hospice. Linney delivers a characteristically powerful performance, capturing the essence of a working-class Floridian, although it may seem somewhat out of place. Harrelson’s presence, on the other hand, contributes little to the overall narrative and mainly serves to enhance the film’s star power.
