Mafia Mamma is directed by Catherine Hardwicke. Written by novelist Amanda Stehr and directed by Michael J. Based on a story co-written by Feldman and Debbie Zhun, Mafia Mamma isn’t in the business of telling a deep plot, and some of the story’s twists are pretty threadbare. But its out-of-the-water story centered around women’s empowerment has little heart and a general message. Whether in an office space, at the table of an organized crime family, or at a wedding, finding a new, better self takes only confidence. To the writers’ and Hardwicke’s credit, after about 10-15 minutes of opening time, which may raise a question as to whether this is the right vehicle for Colette, their film settles into a good groove when its protagonist Italy.
