The film opens in post-war Venice, whose eerie canals and palazzi lend a ghostly atmosphere to the action. Poirot has retreated, enjoying his daily pastries and tending to his garden, while his mind is clouded by the suffering and tragedies he has witnessed. Many hopeful fans are put off by his bodyguard, but Poirot’s old American friend Ariadne Oliver will not be put off. Oliver is a very successful mystery writer with a detective character based on Poirot himself.
